The Campaign
The Atmospheric Emissions and Reactions Observed from Megacities to Marine Areas (AEROMMA) was a field campaign led by NOAA’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL). AEROMMA focused on researching needs in urban air quality, marine emissions, climate feedback, and atmospheric interactions at the marine-urban interface. It consisted of one deployment during the boreal summer of 2023 across major coastal and inland cities in the eastern and western United States. NASA DC-8 aircraft was equipped with several in situ instruments to characterize atmospheric composition in urban and marine environments. Supplementary ground-based and airborne measurements were also collected. AEROMMA was primarily funded by NOAA, but NASA was a significant participant.
