The Campaign

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX) was a field investigation that focused on better understanding the physical and radiative properties of boundary layer and marine stratocumulus clouds. ASTEX was part of the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) project that occurred from 1986 to 1998. ASTEX consisted of one deployment from May to June 1992 across the Azores Islands. Aircraft, research vessels, and ground-based platforms were used to collect measurements of cloud and aerosol properties. ASTEX was a joint effort between NASA and the Office of Naval Research.
