The Campaign

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX) was a field campaign aimed at better understanding the physical and radiative properties of boundary layer and marine stratocumulus clouds. ASTEX was part of the First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) project, which took place from 1986 to 1998. It involved a single deployment from May to June 1992 across the Azores Islands. Researchers used aircraft, vessels, and ground-based platforms to gather measurements of cloud and aerosol characteristics. ASTEX was a collaborative effort between NASA and the Office of Naval Research.
