The Campaign

The Balloon Measurements of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (BATAL) was a NASA field campaign aimed at studying the formation and impacts of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer (ATAL). BATAL involved four deployments during the Asian summer monsoon season across India from 2014 to 2017. Balloon operations also took place in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, during the 2015 and 2016 deployments. Balloon-borne measurements of aerosols, trace gases, and meteorological parameters were collected using radiosondes, ozonesondes, optical particle counters, hygrometers, and a Compact Optical Backscatter Aerosol Detector (COBALD). Additional AERONET and ground-based observations were gathered at Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, and the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) site in Gadanki, India. BATAL was funded through the NASA Upper Atmosphere Research Program (UARP) and the Atmospheric Composition Modeling and Analysis Program (ACMAP).
