The Campaign
The BigFoot Project was a NASA field campaign that collected ground measurements to validate MODIS land cover, leaf area index (LAI), and net and gross primary production products. BigFoot collected LAI and other field measurements at nine Earth Observing System (EOS) validation sites across the United States, Canada, and Brazil from May 1999 to February 2004. Each validation site, representing various biomes such as tundra, cropland, desert, and forest, included a FLUXNET tower to collect data on trace gas fluxes and meteorological parameters. LAI and other vegetation properties were measured directly and through optical methods at designated plots for satellite validation and model input. BigFoot was funded by NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology Program.
