The Campaign

The BigFoot Project was a NASA field campaign that focused on collecting ground measurements for validation of MODIS land cover, leaf area index (LAI), and net and gross primary production products. BigFoot collected LAI and other field measurements at nine Earth Observing System (EOS) validation sites across the United States, Canada, and Brazil from May 1999 to February 2004. Each validation site consisted of a FLUXNET tower to collect measurements of trace gas fluxes and meteorological parameters and represented various biomes including tundra, cropland, desert, and forest. LAI and other vegetation properties were measured through direct and optical methods at designated plots at each site for satellite validation and model input. BigFoot was funded through NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology Program.
