The Campaign
The California Research at the Nexus of Air Quality and Climate Change (CalNex) was a NOAA field investigation focused on studying atmospheric pollution and climate change issues such as emission inventory assessment, atmospheric transport and dispersion, chemical processing, cloud-aerosol interactions, and aerosol radiative effects. It included a deployment from May to July 2010 across California and the eastern Pacific coastal region. Multiple aircraft were used to collect in situ and remote measurements of aerosols, trace gases, radiation, and cloud properties. Additional ground-based measurements were taken from a research vessel, field sites, and balloons. CalNex was mainly funded by NOAA, with NASA providing support for the B-200 aircraft to operate the High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) and Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP).
