The Campaign
CalWater was a multi-year campaign conducted during the boreal winter over the Sierra Nevada mountain range from 2009 to 2015. NASA was a significant participant only in the 2015 deployment (CalWater 2015), providing the NASA ER-2 and various instruments. The primary goals of CalWater were to study how atmospheric rivers influence hydrometeorology and how aerosols affect clouds and precipitation processes. Measurements of aerosols, cloud properties, precipitation, and water vapor were gathered using airborne, ship-borne, and ground-based sensors. CalWater was a collaborative effort involving NOAA, the Department of Energy (DoE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and NASA.
