The Campaign
The Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) was a collaborative effort between NASA and the Iowa Flood Center to validate satellite rainfall data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission. IFloodS included a single deployment from April to June 2013 in parts of northeastern Iowa. Multiple ground radars, streamflow gauges, rain gauges, and disdrometers were deployed to measure precipitation properties such as rainfall rate and drop size distribution. Rainfall data were collected alongside satellite overpasses to evaluate the accuracy of satellite-based rainfall estimates for flood forecasting. IFloodS was part of the NASA GPM Ground Validation (GV) Program investigations.
