The Campaign
The Light Precipitation Evaluation Experiment (LPVEx) was a NASA-led campaign aimed at gaining a better understanding of light precipitation events and providing retrieval validation for current and future satellite missions. The majority of the LPVEx campaign operations took place in and around the Gulf of Finland between September and October of 2010, although ground instruments continued to operate through the end of December. LPVEx utilized the University of Washington’s King Air aircraft, Finland’s Aranda research vessel, and a host of models and satellites to obtain information about the microphysical processes that occur within light precipitation events, the formation of these events, and rainfall estimates. LPVEx supported NASA’s Global Precipitation Mission (GPM).
