The Campaign

The Monterey Area Ship Track (MAST) experiment was a field investigation primarily led by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). MAST aimed to investigate the effects of emissions from ships on the microphysics and radiative properties of marine stratocumulus clouds. It consists of one deployment off the coast of California during June 1994. Multiple aircraft, including NASA ER-2, collected in situ and remote observations of aerosol and cloud properties from ship tracks. Complementary shipborne and sonde measurements were also collected. MAST was funded through the ONR Accelerated Research Initiative, and NASA was a significant participant in the investigation.
