The Campaign
Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) was a NASA-led campaign that focused on studying atmospheric composition and understanding how pollutants are transported to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) through processes like deep convection and biomass-burning feedback loops. SEAC4RS involved a single deployment from August to September 2013, mainly across the continental U.S. Two NASA aircraft, the ER-2 and DC-8, SPEC Inc.’s Learjet, balloon launches, and permanent field sites were all used to collect observations from ground level to the upper atmosphere. SEAC4RS was funded by NASA’s Earth Science Mission Directorate and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
