The Campaign

Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) was a NASA-led campaign that focused on studying atmospheric composition and gaining a better understanding of how pollutants are carried to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) via processes such as deep convection and biomass-burning feedback loops. SEAC4RS consisted of deployment from August to September of 2013 predominantly across the continental U.S. Two NASA aircraft, the ER-2 and DC-8, SPEC Inc.’s Learjet, balloon launches, and permanent field sites were all used to gather observations between the ground and upper portions of the atmosphere. SEAC4RS was funded by both NASA’s Earth Science Mission Directorate and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.
