The Campaign
The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Validation Experiment (SMAPVEX) was a series of calibration and validation field activities for the pre-and post-launch of the SMAP satellite mission. SMAPVEX had five deployments from September 2008 to August 2022 across different locations in the United States and Canada. The Passive Active L-and-S-band Sensor (PALS) and Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) collected airborne remote sensing measurements of land surface and soil moisture for satellite validation. Ground-based observations were also collected using soil moisture and temperature sensors. SMAPVEX was funded through NASA's SMAP satellite mission.
