The Campaign
The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Validation Experiment (SMAPVEX) was a series of calibration and validation field activities conducted before and after the launch of the SMAP satellite mission. SMAPVEX included five deployments from September 2008 to August 2022 at various locations in the United States and Canada. The Passive Active L- and S-band Sensor (PALS) and Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) collected airborne remote sensing data on land surface and soil moisture for satellite validation. Ground-based observations were also made using soil moisture and temperature sensors. SMAPVEX was funded by NASA's SMAP satellite mission.
