The Campaign
The Subsonic Assessment (SASS) Ozone and Nitrogen Oxide Experiment (SONEX) was a NASA field investigation that examined the effects of aircraft emissions on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3) in the upper atmosphere. SONEX involved one deployment during the boreal fall of 1997 over the North Atlantic Flight Corridor. NASA's DC-8 aircraft mainly collected in situ measurements of NOx, O3, hydrocarbons, aerosols, and other trace gases. SONEX was supported by NASA’s Atmospheric Effects of Aviation Project (AEAP) and coordinated with the German Aerospace Agency POLINAT-2 investigation, which focused on pollution from aircraft emissions in the North Atlantic Flight Corridor.
