The Campaign
The Salinity Processes in the Upper Ocean Regional Study (SPURS) was a NASA campaign that focused on studying salinity variations at the ocean surface. SPURS consisted of two deployments: SPURS-1 and SPURS-2. SPURS-1 occurred from August 2012 to October 2013 across the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean. SPURS-2 occurred from August 2016 to November 2017 across the tropical Eastern Pacific Ocean. Shipborne measurements of salinity, sea surface temperature, ocean winds, and other ocean properties were collected. Buoys and several autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) were also deployed to collect supplement measurements. SPURS was funded through NASA’s Physical Oceanography Program.
