The Campaign
The Tropical Cloud Systems and Processes (TCSP) project was a NASA-led campaign aimed at studying tropical cyclone (TC) development and the dynamics and thermodynamics throughout the life cycle of TCs. TCSP had one deployment during July of 2005 utilizing aircraft from both NASA and NOAA as well as ground instrumentation and other remote sensing instruments off the coast of Costa Rica and in the Pacific. The NASA ER-2 was used to collect data at higher altitudes within the TCs while NOAA’s WP-3D aircraft was able to sample closer to the ground. In addition, a regional lightning detection network was used to provide valuable information about the electric environment, while balloon launches helped scientists characterize both the storm and ambient environment before, during, and after TC development. TCSP was funded by the Science Mission Directorate.
