The Campaign
The Tropical Rain Measuring Mission Kwajalein Validation Experiment (TRMM-KWAJEX) was a NASA field campaign that studied precipitation structures over a tropical open ocean to validate TRMM satellite observations. TRMM-KWAJEX involved a single deployment from July to September 1999 over the Kwajalein Atoll and the Marshall Islands. NASA's DC-8, the University of Washington's Convair, and the University of North Dakota's Citation aircraft were equipped with remote sensing and in situ sensors to analyze precipitation and clouds in tropical systems. Additional shipborne and ground-based observations were also gathered. TRMM-KWAJEX was funded through NASA's Atmospheric Dynamics and Precipitation Programs.
