The Campaign

The Tropical Rain Measuring Mission Kwajalein Validation Experiment (TRMM-KWAJEX) was a NASA field campaign that studied precipitation structures over a tropical open ocean for validation for TRMM satellite observations. TRMM-KWAJEX consisted of one deployment from July to September 1999 over the Kwajalein Atoll and Marshall Islands. NASA's DC-8, the University of Washington's Convair, and the University of North Dakota's Citation aircraft were equipped with remote and in situ sensors to characterize precipitation and clouds within tropical systems. Complementary shipborne and ground-based observations were also collected. TRMM-KWAJEX was funded through NASA's Atmospheric Dynamics and Precipitation Programs.
