The Campaign
The Volcano-plume Investigation Readiness and Gas-phase and Aerosol Sulfur (VIRGAS) Experiment was a NASA field investigation that studied sulfur compounds, both naturally occurring and anthropogenically emitted, and their impacts on climate change and air quality. It had one deployment in October 2015 over the southern and midwestern United States. The NASA WB-57 aircraft was equipped with in situ sensors to measure aerosols and trace gases. Complementary balloon-borne profile measurements were collected using the Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer (POPS). VIRGAS was funded by NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Program.
