The Campaign
The Volcano-plume Investigation Readiness and Gas-phase and Aerosol Sulfur (VIRGAS) Experiment was a NASA-funded project that studied sulfur compounds, both naturally occurring and caused by human emissions, as well as their effect on climate change and air quality. It had one deployment in October 2015 over the southern and midwestern United States. NASA WB-57 aircraft was equipped in situ sensor to collect measurements of aerosols and trace gases. Complementary balloon-borne profile measurements were collected using the Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer (POPS). VIRGAS was funded by NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Program.
