The Advanced Lightning Direction Finder (ALDF) is a ground-based lightning detection sensor. It measures the magnetic field strength and arrival time of lightning radio emissions. These measurements are used to determine the location and time of lightning ground strikes. ALDF has a typical maximum range of 600 km. ALDFs are used in various lightning detection networks, including the United States National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN).
