CRDS
Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy

Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) is a laser absorption spectroscopic technique used to detect trace gases and isotopes in a sample. It measures the rate at which light is absorbed by a gas sample contained within an optical cavity. A laser pulse is trapped in the cavity between two highly reflective mirrors, and as the light bounces back and forth, it is absorbed by the gas sample. This causes a gradual decrease in light intensity, and the gas concentration is determined by the time it takes for the light to decay, or "ring down," to a predetermined threshold. CRDS is used to detect various trace gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), water vapor (H2O), and ammonia (NH3).
