Rocketsondes or sounding rockets are sondes released from a rocket instead of a balloon. They can reach altitudes higher than a typical balloon-borne radiosonde. Rocketsondes provide vertical profiles of atmospheric winds, temperature, pressure, density, and moisture upon descent after being ejected from the rocket at or near apogee. NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) launches sounding rockets at Wallops and other locations through its Sounding Rocket Program.
