TPS
Total Precipitation Sensor

The Total Precipitation Sensor (TPS) is an automatic precipitation gauge manufactured by Yankee Environmental Systems, Inc. It is designed for remote, unattended operations and provides real-time snow and liquid precipitation measurements. It includes two isolated plates heated by electrical heaters. The upper plate determines the precipitation rate by measuring how much power is needed to evaporate the precipitation and keep its surface temperature constant. The second plate directly below is heated to the same temperature as the upper plate and helps account for the cooling caused by the wind. TPS can measure precipitation rates up to 50 millimeters per hour with a resolution of 0.1 millimeters per hour.
