Expendable Bathythermograph

The Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) is an in situ probe that measures temperature throughout the water column. XBTs are deployed into the ocean from vessels and provide temperature profiles to depths up to 1800 meters. Water depth can also be calculated due to the XBTs having a set fall rate. NOAA, in collaboration with other agencies, monitors a network of XBTs that are deployed along fixed routes or transects to allow for global monitoring of ocean temperatures
