Overview
The C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop aircraft. Multiple agencies, including NASA and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), own and operate a C-130. It has a maximum flight time of 10 hours and can reach altitudes of up to 25,000 feet. Different models offer varying payload capacities, ranging from 13,000 pounds to around 20,000 pounds.

The Picarro gas concentration analyzer is an in situ airborne or ground-based sensor manufactured by Picarro, Inc. It uses Wavelength-Scanned Cavity Ring Spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) to measure trace gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and water vapor. For carbon dioxide measurements, the laser within Picarro operates at 1603 nm wavelength, while 1651 nm wavelength is used for methane and water vapor measurements. Picarro has a typical sampling time of 2.5 seconds. Depending on the model, Picarro can also provide measurements of carbon isotopes for gas concentrations.

The Programmable Flask Package (PFP) is an airborne whole-air sampler. It includes twelve glass flasks for collecting air samples. These samples are then analyzed to monitor chemical species such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrocarbons, and chlorofluorocarbons. Each flask is sampled for about 2 minutes and pressurized to 40 PSI. PFP can also be utilized for surface-based whole-air sampling.

The Picarro gas concentration analyzer is an in situ airborne or ground-based sensor manufactured by Picarro, Inc. It uses Wavelength-Scanned Cavity Ring Spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) to measure trace gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and water vapor. For carbon dioxide measurements, the laser within Picarro operates at 1603 nm wavelength, while 1651 nm wavelength is used for methane and water vapor measurements. Picarro has a typical sampling time of 2.5 seconds. Depending on the model, Picarro can also provide measurements of carbon isotopes for gas concentrations.

The Airborne Expendable Conductivity Temperature Depth Probe (AXCTD) is an in situ expendable CTD sensor that is deployed from an aircraft. AXCTDs are released from the aircraft into the ocean, where they release a CTD probe to collect measurements of conductivity and temperature up to a depth of 1000 meters. These measurements are sent to the aircraft by radio operating in the 170-173 MHz frequency range. AXCTDs have a typical sampling rate of about 4 Hz and have a vertical resolution of less than 1 meter.

The Push Broom Microwave Radiometer (PBMR) is an airborne passive microwave radiometer developed by NASA’s Langley Research Center (LaRC). It measures brightness temperature at the L-band frequency (1.41 GHz) to determine surface soil moisture. It has a spatial resolution equal to 0.3 times the flight altitude and a swath width of 1.2 times the altitude. For example, at a flight altitude of 300 meters, the spatial resolution would be 90 meters and the swath width would be 360 meters. PBMR features a 25 MHz bandwidth, a 0.5-second integration time, and an accuracy of approximately 2 K.

Chilled Mirror Hygrometers (CMHs) are in situ sensors that directly measure dew point temperature by collecting water vapor on a chilled mirror surface. The mirror's temperature is lowered with thermoelectric coolers until water vapor from the sample gas condenses as dew or frost. The mirror's temperature is then measured using a platinum resistance thermometer (PRT) to determine the dew point and humidity. CMHs have been utilized on both airborne and ground-based platforms and serve as the NIST traceable reference standard for calibrating other sensors.

GEOstationary Coastal and Air Pollution Events (GEO-CAPE) Airborne Simulator (GCAS) is an airborne push-broom instrument with two spectrometers. It was developed by the Radiometric Calibration and Flight Development Laboratory at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as a simulator for the GEO-CAPE mission. The first spectrometer in GCAS operates in the ultraviolet to visible (300-490 nm) range for air quality observations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), formaldehyde (HCHO), and other trace gases. The second spectrometer operates in the visible to near-infrared (480-900 nm) range to provide measurements of ocean color. GCAS has a typical spatial resolution of 250m across track and 500m along track at an altitude of 9 km, with a frame rate of 12 Hz.

The Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment (LARGE) is an in situ airborne instrument suite that measures aerosol and cloud microphysical and optical properties, such as size distribution, number concentration, and scattering and absorption coefficients. LARGE includes several instruments, such as the Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS), Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler (PILS), Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP), Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), and additional cloud and aerosol sensors. The LARGE instruments operate over the 450-700 nm wavelength range, detect particles ranging from 0.003 to 20 μm, and measure at a frequency of 1 Hz. It is primarily used for airborne measurements but can also be deployed on ground-based platforms like vehicles.

The Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment (LARGE) is an in situ airborne instrument suite that measures aerosol and cloud microphysical and optical properties, such as size distribution, number concentration, and scattering and absorption coefficients. LARGE includes several instruments, such as the Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS), Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler (PILS), Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP), Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), and additional cloud and aerosol sensors. The LARGE instruments operate over the 450-700 nm wavelength range, detect particles ranging from 0.003 to 20 μm, and measure at a frequency of 1 Hz. It is primarily used for airborne measurements but can also be deployed on ground-based platforms like vehicles.

GVR is highly sensitive to water vapor, making it ideal for measurements in low-humidity conditions. It has an antenna beamwidth of 1.5 degrees and a data rate of up to 20 Hz. GVR can be configured for ground-based operations and has been used at the Department of Energy (DoE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Central Facility site in Barrow, Alaska.

A pyrometer is a remote-sensing infrared thermometer that measures the temperature of distant objects. It determines an object's temperature by detecting its thermal radiation. The Passive Active L- and S-band Sensor (PALS) is a combined airborne polarimetric radiometer and radar developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). It was designed to evaluate the advantages of merging passive and active remote sensors for measuring ocean salinity and soil moisture. Both the radiometer and radar in PALS operate across the L-band (1.41 GHz, 1.26 GHz) and S-band (2.69 GHz, 3.15 GHz) frequencies to measure brightness temperature and radar backscatter related to ocean salinity and soil moisture. Depending on the aircraft's altitude, PALS has a spatial resolution ranging from 600 to 1500 meters. Its design allows for installation on various aircraft and is typically used to validate observations from the Aquarius and SMAP satellite observations.

The Particule Volume Matter (PVM-100A) is an in situ airborne cloud probe manufactured by Gerber Scientific. It measures liquid water content and the effective radius of cloud droplets by measuring the scattering intensity proportional to the droplets' density and particle surface area density. PVM-100A operates at 780 nm and has a measurement rate of up to 5000 Hz. It can measure droplets in the size range of 3-50 μm diameter. The ground-based model of this instrument is PVM-100.

The Airborne Imaging Microwave Radiometer (AIMR) is a passive, airborne cross-track scanning radiometer developed by MPB Technologies. It was designed for research missions over sea ice and polar regions. AIMR operates across four channels at the 37 GHz and 90 GHz frequencies to provide measurements of brightness temperature. It has a spatial resolution ranging from 20 to 300 m and a swath width of about 3 to 20 km, depending on flight altitude and speed. AIMR can achieve a scan rate of up to approximately 6 Hz.

The Radiation Measurement System (RAMS) is an airborne passive radiometer that measures broadband solar irradiance. RAMS includes two radiometers: the Total Solar Broadband Radiometer (TSBR) and the Fractional Solar Broadband Radiometer (FSBR). The TSBR operates in the 0.224 to 3.91 μm range, while the FSBR operates between 0.68 and 3.3 μm. It has a response time of approximately 60 milliseconds and can provide measurements every 5 meters for aircraft speeds around 75 m/s. RAMS is primarily used for airborne operations but can also be used to collect ground-based measurements.

The Continuous Flow Diffusion Chamber (CFDC) is an in situ airborne optical particle counter (OPC). It uses vertical flow through two chambers with different wall temperatures to grow ice particles inside the OPC at the bottom of the instrument, which helps determine particle size distribution. If conditions are stable, the CFDC can also measure flow rate, temperature, and humidity. It measures the size distribution of aerosol particles ranging from 0.4 to 20 mm. The device counts particles every 0.2 seconds and records particle spectra every 10 seconds.

A pyrometer is a remote-sensing infrared thermometer that measures the temperature of distant objects. It determines an object's temperature by detecting its thermal radiation. It can be mounted on aircraft, ground vehicles, or water-based platforms for surface and sea surface temperature observations. For atmospheric studies, the pyrometer usually operates in the 9.6 to 11.5 µm spectral range and has a temperature range of -25 to 200 degrees Celsius. Pyrometers typically have a response time between 5 milliseconds and 600 seconds.

The 2D-C/P Hydrometeor Imaging Probe (2D-C/P) is an in situ, airborne instrument that captures images of hydrometeors. It records these images by detecting the illuminated or shadowed states of the photodiode array as the shadow of the hydrometeors passes over. 2D-C/P also offers measurements of particle size distribution, cloud droplet concentration, and hydrometeor shape. Typically, 2D-C/P probes have an image resolution of 25 micrometers and can image hydrometeors with diameters up to 1600 micrometers.

The Condensation Nuclei Counter (CNC) is an in situ optical sensor produced by Droplet Measurement Technologies. It detects cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) by supersaturating the sampled air, allowing CCN particles to become detectable. The particles are then measured with an optical particle counter (OPC). CNC can detect particles from 0.75 to 10 μm in diameter and operates at a sampling rate of 1 Hz. It is suitable for both airborne and ground-based operations.

The Multichannel Cloud Radiometer (MCR) is an airborne passive radiometer originally developed by Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) before transferring to NCAR’s Research Aviation Facility (RAF). It operates across seven channels (0.640-10.9 μm) to measure radiance in the visible, near-infrared, and thermal infrared. These measurements are used for the retrieval of cloud properties such as cloud optical depth, cloud droplet sizes, cloud phase, and cloud temperature. MCR has a field of view of 0.007 radians and a data sampling rate of 5000 samples per second.

The Johnson-Williams Cloud Water Meter (CWM) is an airborne hot wire probe designed by Johnson-Williams, Inc. The CWM measures the liquid water content (LWC) of clouds using an electrical circuit that detects resistivity changes caused by cloud droplets evaporating from an exposed heated wire. It can measure LWC levels from 0 to 6 grams per cubic meter and operates at airspeeds between 50 and 150 meters per second. The device runs on a constant current and usually records data at 2 Hz.

The King Probe is an in situ airborne cloud instrument developed by Warren King (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and manufactured by Particle Measuring Systems (PMS) and Droplet Measurement Technologies (DMT). The King Probe measures cloud liquid water content (LWC) by detecting the heat released when water droplets vaporize. It operates at a constant temperature of approximately 100°C and has a data output rate of 1 to 10 Hz. The probe is commonly used in studies of cloud microphysics and aircraft icing.
