Overview

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy is a polar icebreaker built by Avondale Industries and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Healy is designed for oceanographic research across polar regions due to its ability to operate in low temperatures (-45 degrees C) and to break 4.5 feet of ice continuously at 3 knots. It has over 4,200 square feet of laboratory space and is equipped with advanced technology and machinery for a variety of research activities. The Healy is about 128 meters long and can accommodate up to 50 researchers.
