The Doppler on Wheels (DOW) is a network of mobile Doppler radars operated by the Center for Severe Weather Research (CSWR). DOW includes three dual-frequency, dual-polarization radars that operate in the X-band frequency range (9.35-9.55 GHz). They feature a narrow beam (0.8-0.9 degrees), rapid-scan capabilities, and a gate spacing of 15 to 600 meters. DOW radars are mounted on 7500 series International Workstar Trucks and can be easily deployed to various locations to gather radar measurements of meteorological phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and microbursts. Since its inception in the 1990s, the DOW has participated in numerous research and educational programs. It has been part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities (LAOF) program since 2008.

The Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) is a mobile Ku-/Ka-band radar that was developed for NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Ground The Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) is a mobile Ku-/Ka-band radar developed for NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Ground Validation (GV) program. D3R measures radar backscatter to provide reflectivity, Doppler velocity, differential reflectivity, correlation coefficient, and other radar observations. These measurements help derive droplet size distribution and identify hydrometer types. D3R has a beam width of approximately 0.9 degrees, a maximum range of 30 km, and a gate spacing of 150 m. It operates at wavelengths similar to the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on the GPM Core satellite and can be used to validate DPR observations.

The NOAA X-band dual-Polarimetric (NOXP) radar is a mobile ground-based radar developed by the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). It is used to measure various weather phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms, and dust storms. Operating at a 3 cm wavelength, it can detect smaller particles like tiny water droplets and snowflakes. NOXP has a gate spacing of 75 m, a maximum unambiguous range of 88 km, and a volume scan time of 2-3 minutes.

The AutoMObile trace Gas (AMOG) Surveyor is an in situ mobile instrument suite developed by Bubbleology Research International (BRI). It consists of several gas, aerosol, and meteorological sensors mounted on a passenger vehicle. AMOG provides measurements of trace gases, aerosols, temperature, wind, pressure, humidity, and radiation at a rate of 5 Hz to 0.016 Hz, depending on the sensor. It has a spatial resolution of 0.04 m to 24 m, depending on the velocity of the vehicle.

A pyrgeometer is a ground-based or airborne passive radiation sensor. It measures downward and upward longwave radiation in the 4-50 μm spectral range. Pyrgeometers measure changes in resistance/voltage using a thermopile sensor to determine longwave radiation. These measurements can be used to calculate the infrared radiation flux. Pyrgeometers are typically used for climatological, meteorological, and agricultural applications.

The Microwave Profiling Radiometer (MPR) is a ground-based passive radiometer manufactured by Radiometrics Corporation. It measures brightness temperature across 21 K-band frequency (21-30 GHz) channels and 14 V-band frequency (51-59 GHz) channels. These measurements can be used to retrieve cloud base temperature, cloud base height, integrated liquid, and profiles of temperature, water vapor, relative humidity, and liquid water. MPR has a vertical range from the surface to 10 km and provides retrievals every 1 minute. It has a height resolution of 50 m from the surface to 0.5 km, 100 m from 0.5 to 2 km, and 250 m from 2 to 10 km.

The Mobile Integrated Sounding System (MISS) is a mobile suite of ground-based instruments operated by NCAR. It is the mobile version of NCAR’s Integrated Sounding System (ISS). MISS consists of several instruments mounted on a larger trailer to profile the atmospheric boundary layer. The MISS instrument suite includes a 915 MHz wind profiler, radiosondes, and surface meteorology sensors. It is rapidly deployable and is typically used for studying convective systems.

The Sound Detection and Ranging (SODAR) is an active ground-based acoustic sensor that measures atmospheric winds and turbulence. It sends acoustic energy into the atmosphere and detects the strength and frequency of the backscattered energy. The backscattered signal can be used to determine the horizontal wind field, assuming the scattered energy moves with the mean wind. SODARs are frequently used in boundary layer studies to measure turbulence and wind profiles.

The Spectron Engineering-590 (SE-590) Spectroradiometer is a portable spectroradiometer manufactured by Spectron Engineering. It can be used on both airborne and ground-based platforms. SE-590 uses a charge-coupled device (CCD) area array detector to measure reflectance. It operates across the visible to short-wave infrared spectral range (350-2500 nm). The SE-590 has a ground resolution of 4.5 meters when flown at an altitude of 300 meters.

The Tunable Optical Profiler for Aerosol and oZone (TOPAZ) is a lidar system developed by the NOAA Chemical Sciences Laboratory. Originally designed for airborne use, it has been reconfigured for deployment in a trailer for ground-based operations. It employs the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique to measure ozone concentrations and aerosol backscatter profiles up to 6 to 8 km above ground level (AGL). It functions within the 285 to 310 nm wavelength range and offers an ozone profile vertical resolution of 5 m near the surface and 1000 m at 8 km AGL. TOPAZ is part of the NASA Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet).

It detects cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) by supersaturating the sampled air, allowing CCN particles to become detectable. The particles are then measured with an optical particle counter (OPC). CNC can detect particles from 0.75 to 10 μm in diameter and operates at a sampling rate of 1 Hz. It is suitable for both airborne and ground-based operations.

The LARGE instruments operate over the 450-700 nm wavelength range, detect particles ranging from 0.003 to 20 μm, and measure at a frequency of 1 Hz. It is primarily used for airborne measurements but can also be deployed on ground-based platforms like vehicles.

These measurements can be used to retrieve cloud base temperature, cloud base height, integrated liquid, and profiles of temperature, water vapor, relative humidity, and liquid water. MPR has a vertical range from the surface to 10 km and provides retrievals every 1 minute. It has a height resolution of 50 m from the surface to 0.5 km, 100 m from 0.5 to 2 km, and 250 m from 2 to 10 km.

The Sound Detection and Ranging (SODAR) is an active ground-based acoustic sensor that measures atmospheric winds and turbulence. It sends acoustic energy into the atmosphere and detects the strength and frequency of the backscattered energy. The backscattered signal can be used to determine the horizontal wind field, assuming the scattered energy moves with the mean wind. SODARs are frequently used in boundary layer studies to measure turbulence and wind profiles.

The Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS) is an in situ airborne spectrometer manufactured by Droplet Measurement Technologies. It combines the Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), the Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), and the Hotwire Liquid Water Content (LWC) Sensor into a single instrument. CAPS measures the size distribution of aerosol, cloud, and liquid droplets for particles between 50-1600 μm in size, with a time resolution of 1 Hz. It can also capture images of cloud particles and provide measurements of temperature, pressure, and LWC.

The Multifilter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR) is a ground-based passive radiometer used to measure the global and diffuse components of solar irradiance. It measures solar irradiance across six narrowband channels and one broadband channel. The nominal wavelengths of the narrowband channels are 415, 500, 615, 673, 870, and 940 nm. MFRSR has a typical sampling interval of 20 seconds and takes measurements at four different shadowband positions: nadir, first side-band, sun-blocked, and second side-band. MFRSR is deployed across several of the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility sites.

The Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) is an in situ ground-based optical disdrometer. APU measures the size and fall velocity of hydrometeors with a range of 0-25 mm in size and 0-20 m/s in fall speed. APU operates in the 650-780 nm wavelength range and typically samples every 10 seconds.

The Micro Rain Radar (MRR) is a ground-based, vertically oriented, continuous wave K-band (24.23 GHz) radar that measures various parameters of precipitation, such as liquid water content and rain rate, from near ground level to the lower troposphere. The backscatter captured by the MRR’s antenna can determine precipitation size distributions ranging from 0.25 mm to 4.53 mm and can also calculate the frequency shift of falling precipitation to determine its velocity. Additional uses of the MRR include identifying bright bands, nowcasting precipitation, and tracking chemical transport during precipitation events. It has a range resolution of 10 to 200 meters and a sampling time of 10 seconds.

The Stratospheric Ozone Lidar Trailer Experiment (STROZ-LITE) is a mobile lidar system operated by Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), housed in a 45-foot trailer. It uses the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique to detect ozone at wavelengths of 308 and 351 nm. Temperature profiles can also be determined using lidar backscatter measurements at 351 nm. The system has been modified to include Raman lidar channels at 332 and 382 nm wavelengths for more precise ozone measurements and aerosol backscatter detection. Depending on altitude, STROZ-LITE has a range resolution ranging from 1.2 to 6.75 km.

The Doppler on Wheels (DOW) is a network of mobile Doppler radars operated by the Center for Severe Weather Research (CSWR). DOW includes three dual-frequency, dual-polarization radars that operate in the X-band frequency range (9.35-9.55 GHz). They feature a narrow beam (0.8-0.9 degrees), rapid-scan capabilities, and a gate spacing of 15 to 600 meters. DOW radars are mounted on 7500 series International Workstar Trucks and can be easily deployed to various locations to gather radar measurements of meteorological phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and microbursts. Since its inception in the 1990s, the DOW has participated in numerous research and educational programs. It has been part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities (LAOF) program since 2008.

The Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) is an in situ ground-based optical disdrometer. APU measures the size and fall velocity of hydrometeors with a range of 0-25 mm in size and 0-20 m/s in fall speed. Using these measurements, the drop size distribution, type, intensity, and amount of precipitation can be determined. APU operates in the 650-780 nm wavelength range and typically samples every 10 seconds.

The microwave radiometers (MWRs) are ground-based radiometers manufactured by Radiometrics Corporation and operated by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Research Facility. MWR measures brightness temperature at 23.8 and 31.4 GHz to determine the column amounts of water vapor and liquid water in the atmosphere. MWR has a field of view (FOV) ranging from about 5.9 to 4.5 degrees depending on the channel and typically has a time resolution of 20 seconds for sky-view observations.

The Mobile Integrated Profiling System (MIPS) is a ground-based mobile instrument suite operated by the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). It comprises several remote sensing instruments mounted on a trailer to gather profiles and vertical structures of winds, precipitation, and clouds. These instruments include an X-band Profiling Radar (XPR), a Microwave Profiling Radiometer (MPR), a 915 MHz Wind Profiler, a ceilometer, and a Doppler Sodar. It also features multiple in situ meteorological sensors for surface measurements of temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and winds. MIPS is mainly used for studies of severe weather and the boundary layer.

The Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) is a ground-based passive interferometer developed by the University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (UW-SSEC) for the Department of Energy (DoE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program. It uses Fourier transform spectroscopy to measure downwelling thermal infrared emissions from the atmosphere. These measurements can be used to provide profile measurements of atmospheric temperature and water vapor and detect trace gases. AERI operates across the 3.3-19 μm spectral range and up to 25 μm for the extended range version of the instrument. It has an optimal vertical resolution of 100 meters and completes a full sky scan about every 20 seconds.

The Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching Radar (SMART-R) is a mobile Doppler radar platform program operated by the University of Oklahoma. SMART-R is a C-band radar that is mounted on a truck to collect radar measurements during precipitation events such as tornadic storms, hurricanes, and flash floods. SMART-R has a beamwidth of 1.5 degrees and a selectable bin spacing of 67 to 2000 meters. The University of Oklahoma operates two SMART-R C-band radars: SR-1 (5635 MHz) and SR-2 (5612.82 MHz).

The Doppler Lidar (DL) is a ground-based lidar system used to measure radial velocity and attenuated aerosol backscatter. It detects aerosol backscatter in the near-infrared (1.5 microns) and uses coherent detection to measure the Doppler frequency shift of the backscatter signal to determine radial velocity. It features a range gate size of 18 to 60 meters, a typical maximum data range of 9.6 km, and a temporal resolution of 0.01 to 30 seconds. The Department of Energy operates DLs at its Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility sites.

The Microwave Profiling Radiometer (MPR) is a ground-based passive radiometer manufactured by Radiometrics Corporation. It measures brightness temperature across 21 K-band frequency (21-30 GHz) channels and 14 V-band frequency (51-59 GHz) channels. These measurements can be used to retrieve cloud base temperature, cloud base height, integrated liquid, and profiles of temperature, water vapor, relative humidity, and liquid water. MPR has a vertical range from the surface to 10 km and provides retrievals every 1 minute. It has a height resolution of 50 m from the surface to 0.5 km, 100 m from 0.5 to 2 km, and 250 m from 2 to 10 km.

The NOAA X-band dual-Polarimetric (NOXP) radar is a mobile ground-based radar developed by the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). It is used to measure various weather phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms, and dust storms. Operating at a 3 cm wavelength, it can detect smaller particles like tiny water droplets and snowflakes. NOXP has a gate spacing of 75 m, a maximum unambiguous range of 88 km, and a volume scan time of 2-3 minutes.

The Goddard Lidar Observatory for Wind (GLOW) is a mobile, van-mounted Doppler lidar system operated by Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). It employs direct detection Doppler lidar techniques to measure line-of-sight wind profiles. It detects either aerosol backscatter at 1064 nm or molecular backscatter at 355 nm to determine wind profiles from the surface to the lower stratosphere. GLOW can provide lidar wind profiles up to 20 km with a 1 km vertical resolution and 1-minute averaging under typical clean-air conditions.

An Electric Field Mill (EFM) is a ground-based and airborne electric sensor developed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). It measures the full vector components of the atmospheric electric field and provides information about the electrical structure within and around storms. EFMs can detect both intracloud and cloud-to-ground lightning and can operate in large thunderstorm fields (thousands of volts per meter). An EFM typically has a response time of about 10 Hz.

The High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) is an airborne lidar system developed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). It uses the HSRL technique at 532 nm and the standard backscatter technique at 1064 nm to provide profile measurements of aerosol backscatter, extinction, and depolarization. The profiles of aerosol backscatter and depolarization typically have a vertical resolution of 30 m and a horizontal resolution of about 1 km. For the extinction profiles, the vertical resolution is 300 m with a horizontal resolution of approximately 6 km. HSRL is usually flown during investigations to validate observations from the CALIPSO spaceborne lidar.

Due to operating on a smaller wavelength, the X-band radars are more sensitive and can detect smaller particles, making them useful for studying light precipitation and cloud development.

It has a range gate spacing of 125 meters.
