The Doppler on Wheels (DOW) is a network of mobile Doppler radars operated by the Center for Severe Weather Research (CSWR). DOW consists of three dual-frequency, dual-polarization radars that operate in the X-band frequency range (9.35-9.55 GHz). They have a narrow beam (0.8-0.9 degree), rapid-scan capabilities, and gate spacing length of 15 to 600 meters. DOW radars are mounted on 7500 series International Workstar Trucks and are easily deployable to various locations to provide radar measurements of meteorological phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and microbursts. The DOW has participated in several research and educational programs since its inception in the 1990s and has been a part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities (LAOF) program since 2008.

The Dual-frequency Dual-polarized Doppler Radar (D3R) is a mobile Ku-/Ka-band radar that was developed for NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Ground Validation (GV) program. D3R is an active remote, ground-based sensor that measures radar backscatter to provide reflectivity, Doppler velocity, differential reflectivity, correlation coefficient, and other radar observations. These measurements can be used to derive droplet size distribution and determine hydrometer type. D3R has a beam width of around 0.9 degrees, a maximum range of 30 km, and a gate spacing of 150 m. D3R operates at similar wavelengths as the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on the GPM Core satellite and can be used for validation of DPR observations.

It has been used to provide radar measurements of various weather phenomena such as tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms, and dust storms. It operates at a 3 cm wavelength allowing it to detect smaller particles such as tiny water droplets and snowflakes. NOXP has a gate spacing of 75 m, a maximum unambiguous range of 88 km, and a volume scan time of 2-3 minutes.

The Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching Radar (SMART-R) is a mobile Doppler radar platform program operated by the University of Oklahoma. SMART-R is a C-band radar that is mounted on a truck to collect radar measurements during precipitation events such as tornadic storms, hurricanes, and flash floods. SMART-R has a beamwidth of 1.5 degrees and a selectable bin spacing of 67 to 2000 meters. The University of Oklahoma operates two SMART-R C-band radars: SR-1 (5635 MHz) and SR-2 (5612.82 MHz).

The Mobile Integrated Sounding System (MISS) is a mobile suite of ground-based instruments operated by NCAR. It is the mobile version of NCAR’s Integrated Sounding System (ISS). MISS consists of several instruments mounted on a larger trailer to profile the atmospheric boundary layer. The MISS instrument suite includes a 915 MHz wind profiler, radiosondes, and surface meteorology sensors. It is rapidly deployable and is typically used for studying convective systems.

Ceilometers are ground-based, remote-sensing sensors that provide measurements of cloud ceilings and vertical visibility. They use either a laser beam or another light source to detect backscatter of clouds, precipitation, and aerosols. Ceilometers can provide detailed and accurate measurements in all types of weather conditions and have low operating costs. Ceilometers are typically used in boundary layer and cloud research applications.

The Mobile Alabama X-Band radar (MAX) is a truck-mounted radar owned and operated by the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). MAX is often used during severe weather deployments. In addition to its mobility, MAX also has a quick set up time. MAX is a joint effort between UAH and Baron.

SE-590 uses a charge-coupled device (CCD) area array detector to measure reflectance. It operates in the visible/near-infrared to short-wave infrared spectral range (350-2500 nm). SE-590 has a ground resolution of 4.5 meters at a flight altitude of 300 meters.

The Modular Multiband Radiometer (MMR) is an airborne multispectral radiometer manufactured by Barnes Engineering Company. MMR measures radiance across 8 spectral bands in the infrared and visible wavelengths (0.4-12.5 μm) to provide imagery of vegetation and other surface features. At an altitude of 300 m, the MMR has an instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of approximately 79 m and a 15-degree field of view (FOV). It is typically deployed on small aircraft such as helicopters but can be deployed on ground-based platforms as well.

LARGE consists of multiple instruments including the Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS), Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler (PILS), Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP), Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), and additional cloud and aerosol sensors. The LARGE instruments operate across the 450-700 nm wavelength range, can detect particles in the size range between 0.003-20μm, and have a measurement frequency of 1 Hz. It is typically used for airborne measurements, but it also can be deployed on ground-based platforms such as vehicles.

The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) is an in situ airborne or ground-based aerosol sensor manufactured by TSI Incorporated. SMPS uses a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) to measure the electrical mobility diameter of aerosol particles to determine the size distribution. It also measures the number of aerosol particles by using a condensation particle counter (CNC). It can detect particles within the size range of 10-1000 nm and can provide measurements typically around 10 seconds per scan.

The Personal Ozone Monitor (POM) is an in situ handheld ozone monitor manufactured by 2B Technologies. POM uses ultraviolet (UV) absorption at 254 nm to provide measurements of ozone concentration. POM can measure ozone concentrations from up to 10 ppm at a resolution of 0.1 ppb. It has a sampling frequency of 0.1 Hz and 0.5 Hz in fast mode. It is typically used for ground-based applications, but POM has been deployed on uncrewed aerial systems (UAS).

The Differential UltraViolet Absorption Spectroscopy (DUVAS) instrument is a ground based instrument that can also be used on mobile platforms to study air quality. DUVAS uses light from the ultraviolet spectrum to measure the quantity of different gaseous species in ppb. DUVAS is capable of a measurement frequency of 1 s. DUVAS is compatible with an Android app designed to show the concentrations measured by the instrument over a map or satellite imagery.

Condensation Particle Counters (CPCs) are in situ sensors that measure aerosol particle concentration. CPCs measure aerosol concentration by condensing fluid onto the particles, allowing them to grow to more detectable sizes for optical scattering. Typically, CPCs can detect particles with a size range of 7 nm-3 μm, can measure particle concentrations up to 100,000 particles/cc, and can provide measurements at 1-second intervals. CPCs are manufactured by TSI Incorporated and can be deployed on airborne, shipborne, and ground-based platforms.

The Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) is a spectrometer that measures the chemical composition and properties of sub-micron aerosol particles. AMS has a maximum data collection of 100 Hz and can detect particles with a size range of 40 nm to 1 micron. It operates by switching between mass spectrum (MS) mode and particle time-of-flight (PToF) mode to determine the chemical makeup of aerosol samples. The AMS can be deployed on aircraft, ships, mobile laboratories, or placed directly at a field site.

Condensation Particle Counters (CPCs) are in situ sensors that measure aerosol particle concentration. CPCs measure aerosol concentration by condensing fluid onto the particles, allowing them to grow to more detectable sizes for optical scattering. Typically, CPCs can detect particles with a size range of 7 nm-3 μm, can measure particle concentrations up to 100,000 particles/cc, and can provide measurements at 1-second intervals. CPCs are manufactured by TSI Incorporated and can be deployed on airborne, shipborne, and ground-based platforms.

The Los Gatos Research (LGR) Greenhouse Gas Analyzer (GGA) is an in situ airborne or ground-based analyzer. It uses off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) technology to measure methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water vapor (H2O) simultaneously. It can measure CH4 up to 100 ppm, CO2 up to 20,000 ppm, and H2O up to 30,000 ppm. It has a selectable measurement rate of 0.01 to 1 Hz, with some models having a fast flow option for rates up to 10 Hz.

The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) is an in situ airborne or ground-based aerosol sensor manufactured by TSI Incorporated. SMPS uses a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) to measure the electrical mobility diameter of aerosol particles to determine the size distribution. Aethalometer is an in situ aerosol instrument manufactured by Magee Scientific that can be deployed on either airborne or ground-based platforms. It samples aerosols through a filter tape and measures the attenuation of transmitted light to determine the concentration of black carbon particles. The Aethalometer operates across seven optical wavelengths (370, 470, 520, 590, 660, 880, and 950 nm) and can provide data at a rate of 1 Hz. It has a measurement range of 0-500 μg per cubic meter and a resolution of 0.1 μg per cubic meter.

The Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS) is an in situ airborne spectrometer manufactured by Droplet Measurement Technologies. The Langley Aerosol Research Group Experiment (LARGE) is an in situ airborne instrument suite that measures aerosol and cloud microphysical and optical properties such as size distribution, number concentration, and scattering and absorption coefficient. LARGE consists of multiple instruments including the Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS), Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler (PILS), Particle Soot Absorption Photometer (PSAP), Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), and additional cloud and aerosol sensors. The LARGE instruments operate across the 450-700 nm wavelength range, can detect particles in the size range between 0.003-20μm, and have a measurement frequency of 1 Hz. It is typically used for airborne measurements, but it also can be deployed on ground-based platforms such as vehicles.

The Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching Radar (SMART-R) is a mobile Doppler radar platform program operated by the University of Oklahoma. SMART-R is a C-band radar that is mounted on a truck to collect radar measurements during precipitation events such as tornadic storms, hurricanes, and flash floods. SMART-R has a beamwidth of 1.5 degrees and a selectable bin spacing of 67 to 2000 meters. The University of Oklahoma operates two SMART-R C-band radars: SR-1 (5635 MHz) and SR-2 (5612.82 MHz).

An Electric Field Mill (EFM) is an in situ airborne and ground-based electric sensor designed and built at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). It measures the full vector components of the atmospheric electric field and provides details about the electrical structure within and around a storm. EFMs can detect both intracloud and cloud-to-ground lightning and can operate during large thunderstorm fields (thousands of volts/meter). An EFM has a typical time response of about 10 Hz.

The Langley Mobile Ozone Lidar (LMOL) is an active remote sensor that utilizes a laser to measure atmospheric ozone and aerosols. LMOL is housed in a trailer so that it is easily transferred to different locations. The laser has a 287 nm and a 292 nm wavelength for ozone retrievals and a 527 nm wavelength for other aerosol retrievals. In addition, it has a 70 ns pulse width and a 7.5 m range resolution. LMOL is part of the Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet), which is operated by NASA.

The Proton Transfer Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS) is an in situ airborne and ground-based spectrometer designed by the University of Innsbruck in Austria. It measures volatile organic compounds (VOCs) without sample preparation at very low concentrations. PTR-MS uses chemical ionization mass spectroscopy allowing for fast and highly sensitive detection of VOCs. It has a 0.5 to 1 s signal integration time.

The Picarro gas concentration analyzer is an in situ airborne or ground-based sensor manufactured by Picarro, Inc. It uses Wavelength-Scanned-Cavity Ring Spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) to measure trace gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and water vapor. For carbon dioxide measurements, the laser within Picarro operates at 1603 nm wavelength and 1651 nm wavelength for methane and water vapor measurements. Picarro has a typical sampling time of 2.5 seconds. Depending on the model, Picarro can also provide measurements of carbon isotopes for gas concentrations.

The Quantum Cascade Laser System (QCLS) is an airborne and ground-based in situ spectrometer system designed by Harvard University and Aerodyne Research. QCLS consists of two instruments: the Harvard QCL DUAL instrument and the Harvard QCL CO2 instrument. QCL DUAL uses two thermoelectrically cooled QCL light sources to measure carbon monoxide (CO) at 4.59 microns and methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) at 7.87 microns. QCL CO2 instrument uses a single QCL light source to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations at 4.32 microns. QCLS has a measurement frequency of 1 Hz.

The Cloud Aerosol and Precipitation Spectrometer (CAPS) is an in situ airborne spectrometer manufactured by Droplet Measurement Technologies. It combines the Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), the Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer (CAS), and the Hotwire Liquid Water Content (LWC) Sensor into one instrument. CAPS measures the size distribution of aerosol, cloud, and liquid droplets for particles between the sizes of 50-1600 μm at a time resolution of 1 Hz. It can also record images of cloud particles and provide measurements of temperature, pressure, and LWC.

The NATIVE payload includes in situ trace instruments, passive and active remote sensing instruments, and several meteorological probes. It is owned and operated by Pennsylvania State University.

NOx/NOxy is an in situ chemiluminescence instrument. It provides measurements of nitrogen oxides and ozone in the atmosphere at a spatial resolution better than 100m for typical DC-8 research flight speeds. NOx/NOxy can be utilized on ground-based, airborne, and shipborne platforms allowing it to be used in various types of atmospheric chemistry and air quality studies.

The Micro Rain Radar (MRR) is a ground-based, vertically pointing, continuous wave K-band (24.23 GHz) radar that measures various parameters of precipitation such as liquid water content and rain rate from near ground level to the lower troposphere. The backscatter received by the MRR’s antenna can measure precipitation size distributions in the range of 0.25 mm to 4.53 mm, as well as calculate the frequency shift of falling precipitation to be used to calculate its velocity. Additional applications of the MRR include locating bright bands, nowcasting precipitation, and capturing chemical transport during precipitation events.

They use either a laser beam or another light source to detect backscatter of clouds, precipitation, and aerosols. Ceilometers can provide detailed and accurate measurements in all types of weather conditions and have low operating costs. The Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) is an in situ ground-based optical disdrometer. APU measures the size and fall velocity of hydrometeors with a size range of 0-25mm and fall velocities between 0-20 m/s. From these measurements, the drop size distribution, type, intensity, and amount of precipitation can be determined. APU operates in the 650-780 nm wavelength range and has a typical sampling frequency of 10 s.
